I should have 3 computers , or some more discipline :D

The origin of my problem is that I followed some
HowToMakeYourLinuxLookLikeaMac, to learn more about the working of the
window manager system.
I installed some packages using synaptic, but it was late in the evening
already, so I didn't finish the configuration, didn't remember what packages
I had installed, didn't check if they were written for Gnome or KDE , etc.

So this morning, the first thing I did was change the Jack control start
command back to "/usr/bin/qjackctl"
then read your replies here, and did "$ pstree" (=and learned a new
command)
so I could see that ESD was running ..

Then GNOME Menu >> Desktop >> Preferences >> Sound : here I unticked the
"enable system sounds (ESD)" choice.
Now I can start Jack with no complaints, with the simple qjackctl command

If I'd want to enable system sounds again (which I don't) , I'd have to
change the icons' commands to "killall esd & ..." for all soundcard using
applications, or is there something else I'm missing ?

Thanks again :)
