Hi Daryl :)

I don't know if I understand your trouble. At the moment you are fine
with only one sound card, but you don't know which sound card is the USB
device and you would like to give the device's IOs names, right?

There is a way to give sound cards consistent numbers, see
http://www.64studio.com/faq_user number 12, but you don't need to do
this. If you'll do it, you can get the driver names, after installing
hwinfo and as root running hwinfo --sound (just change the _ of the
driver names to -).

If you are using Jack control, you can use Setup... >> Tab: Settings >>
and choose the device by using the >-button, there the devices are
called by names.

The third way to force one sound card to be the default number 0 is to
run alsaconf as root, but this will cause the loss of other devices,
e.g. MPU-MIDI or USB-MIDI-devices.

If there are more inputs or outputs shown as "capture_x" and
"playback_x" as you think your sound card has got, the first IOs in
normal circumstances are the analogue IOs in normal order.

It's possible to change the names for Jack control Patchbay, but I can't
see a way to change the names for Connect, not by alsa, qjackctl or jackd.

Once you have a perfect setup you might use LASH to save it, but I don't
know how and if it works.

Sorry, this is all I know.

Cheers,
Ralf
