Yes, I have 1.7.1 on Archlinux  and Sidux and I've had no problems, by 
the way, 1.7.2 is out but I haven't tried it yet.

I can't help you with the kernel. I'm just now starting to learn a bit 
about it because my OS's are 64 bit and flash doesn't work because I 
don't have IA32 built into the kernel. I can send you my .config file if 
you'd like but I'm running 2.6.25.8_rt7-1 and a lot ofthings have changed.

I don't know, If problems persist you might remove it and see.
