Or you could just build it from source.  The open source driver has been
reported to work very well.  It only supports the latest round of ATI
devices though (which it looks like you have).  Ubuntu 8.10 uses the
open source driver by default.

Probably the kernel is having problems with the SATA controller.  A
newer kernel would likely help.
