Instead of running "make install", you can run checkinstall to create a
.deb that can be easily removed or upgraded since the dpkg database has
a record.  Make sure you correctly fill in the version number (it is a
cureses interface that you should be able to easily figure out).

You have to install checkinstall first.  Currently it is packaged for
lenny and sid:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/checkinstall

It is also part of the Ubuntu distro for those using Ubuntu.
