i've had a 4-vcpu vm running xp on a poweredge+esx (2×quad core) for over a month in operational use. in my experience esx does a good job of scheduling multiple cpu's; the vm is running 20 instances of a cpu-intensive application. http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-4960
