FWIW I have a Dell keyboard (kb1421), and an IBM/Lenovo mouse (m-u0013-o) and they work fine on my Pi.
You are connecting them directly to the PI aren't you? - if you want to use a USB hub it must be a powered one it seems - the Pi can supply very little current on its USB interface. -Steve
