IIRC, in Frank Soltis's book on the OS/400 he talks about how not having to do as much context switching (due to TIMI/SLIC) allows java on that platform to post better perfomance than it does running on the same PowerWhatever under AIX/Linux. Also at SC23, I heard a HPE-Cray guy say that for years, they tried to get the low-latency jitter reduction patches into linux, but nobody was interested. Then, suddenly, when the guys who do music production and recording on linux needed that functionality...done.
