Hello Mr Fireman

The first thing I would do is un-install the fax component of Windows
XP by going to Control Panel> add/remove programs> add/remove windows
components> fax and follow the instructions provided.

I recommend a program called "What's Running" it tells you so much
about what's happening in your computer with a simple click you can
find the online information on any highlighted item. A click will
disable any start up item. I normally supplement the information
provided by and through this application with a good start up file
database (e.g. http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/). The program is
free and much better for the inexperienced user than using msconfig,
and so much better also than WinPatrol (the scotty dog has had its
day). Read about it, and download it from here (don't worry it's
free). http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/main.aspx

Good luck
