I know something's going on with my computer, I haven't been able to
pinpoint anything to ask about. I get different errors, none of them
are consistant. Nothing shows up on any virus or spyware scans, or
in the Systems information. I use Zone Alarm 7.0.3370 as a firewall
and virus scanner, and Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Webroot as stand alone
spyware scanners. All of my updates are current, including Windows
and Office.

I have done all the usual housekeeping: clean caches, defrag, empty
recycling and temp files, etc. I have carefully cleaned the inside
of the computer as much as possible, which I have to do fairly
regularly, but sometimes let slide. All the cards, memory, and
cables are set, as far as I can tell.

I'm afraid to try cleaning the registry. I'm sure it needs it, but I
need a computer, not a big paperweight. I have an emachine T6536,
running XP Home, and I use dialup. Sometimes the system will run
slow or freeze, and Zone Alarm craters a little more often than it
used to, but the latter seems to be expected from what I've
researched, and a cold reboot usually fixes things.

Whatever it is started in the USB ports - that's where I first got
error messages. The computer couldn't get information from my
external drive, and sent me an error message about the USB port. I
shut down, pulled out and plugged the cable back in, booted,
everything was fine. Couple of days later, the printer and the
external drive had problems. Did the same thing, and all worked well.

Next I lost the external drive completely, the computer won't
acknowledge it. Inconvenient, but not a big problem, since most of
my data files are on all three drives. Then Firefox started acting
up, won't open a pdf file and crashes on shutdown. I didn't think
that was related, but now I am not sure.

This morning I went to get online, and had to type in my account name
and password, when it usually comes up automatically. Then I got an
error 77, which said it couldn't find the connected address book, and
wouldn't let me call. I did a cold reboot, tried to dial out again,
and everything worked as normal, and here I am.

I haven't been able to pinpoint anything with regular troubleshooting
techniques. Am I being a little too paranoid?

Thanks
Theresa
