Since you say that sometimes the emails "are" deleted from gmail, I'm 
guessing that your dialup speed might have something to do with the 
problem - not a setting.  Try staying online a while after the messages 
are downloaded so TB has a chance to confirm to gmail that the messages 
have been received (don't log off right away).
Also, in the TB options settings there is an option to "leave messages 
on the server".  So you can try un-checking that.

Not related to your problem, but a tip: if you find accessing the full 
gmail site via dialup waaay too slow, you can access the gmail "mobile" 
site which has most of the same features, but loads much, much faster 
since it's HTML only (no scripts):
|mail.google.com/mail/h| <http://mail.google.com/mail/h>
