I think the distortion is just a setting in the NCP.  Plus, you don't 
want to set the resolution to higher than your monitor supports. It's 
best (for appearance sake) to run a monitor at its native resolution.  
What's the brand and model of the monitor that is distorted?

I would try going into NCP and go down the list for each category. Each 
category should show an option (usually at the top) to "reset default 
values".  So I would go through all the categories and reset the 
defaults.  But of course leave the dual monitor category setup the way 
it is.
