I have always used X as a chord to mean "silence".
I use / to mean "repeat the previous chord" at this point - this means that
you can show the rhythm by a pattern of slashes underneath the notes in
tadpole notation (of course this doesn't work when there are no notes),
I have always taken (that space was deliberately left empty)
to mean "there is no information recorded. Maybe there is no chord, maybe
there is, maybe it's the same one as before, maybe not".
I strongly support having a chord written in each bar whether it changes or
not. I am fairly happy if it is "/" but given the choice I rewrite the
chord name. (I also invariably convert the ABC to tadpoles for reading).
