| I suppose the only realistic way to get anything resembling that wouild

| Any suggestions?
After a few such questions, I wrote up a brief description of how to
use my tune finder's cgi scripts to do this:
http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/ABCconversion.html
This only works if your abc tune is somewhere on the web, since you
have to give the script your URL. It will grab your file, extract the
tune, convert it to any of its list of formats, and send your browser
the result.
Several people had already figured this out, actually, since the URLs
that the tune finder uses are intentionally rather obvious. But this
was limited to people who understood the syntax of URLs, which isn't
all that large a percent of the users.
I've occasionally thought of a set of scripts that would let someone
enter an abc tune remotely and then convert it to various formats. In
fact, I sorta have all the pieces implemented. But it's not all that
obvious just how the web pages should work.
BTW, I've been wondering whether I should look at a few of the other
ascii music notations, such as Songwright, and see if I can include
them in my searches and retrievals. It shouldn't be all that
difficult to spot other formats and do a conversion, though of course
the result might not always be perfect. I wonder how many other
plain-text music notations there are, and how good their specs are?
