Well, the goal of FreeDOS is to create a 8088 compliant OS.
It's really doing quite well, now :-)
I personally use it on a 386sx25 notebook with 1 MB of RAM.
Well, I can even play Nethack on it ;-)

Yes, at current point, there are WYSIWYG word processing tools for DOS, but
none of them are free software.

Negative! Linux requires at _absolute_ minimum 4MB RAM, any version of
windows is proprietary...
Well, I still own a copy of Win3.1 and Works3.0 but have you ever tried
to open newer formats with that? Besides, it's not free at all. So, while
this may be an option for a single user, it's not for the community.
But there's a way of looking at Word files at least, it's called antiword
(http://www.winfield.demon.nl/index.html#DOS).

There is also some project sending computers based on FreeDOS into these
countries.

Well, _this_ is out of my reach. Nowadays, you either get win32 progs
(or Linux, preferrably) or plain DOS.
