I was thinking of running just X + FVWM + gtk abiword.
I used to use an 8 megabyte 33 Mhz 486 running linux and FVWM with
X-windows. It worked quite well.
I used to run emacs on this machine and I recall it giving acceptable
performance. My colleague used to show me his 486 running winword on a
similar machine. He liked it but it seemed unbelievablly slow and clunky
to me.
I guess that abiword on a 16 megabyte 66 Mhz 486 would be similar. Usable
to someone with low expectations.
