See bug (RFE) 2031 (http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2031) which allows a workaround. Bug (RFE) 2031 was fixed by Dom Lachowicz, having the initial paragraph default to the Normal style. If you change the font style of Normal to the font you prefer, I think that will solve your problem. (I just downloaded AbiWord 0.9.5 (for Windows) and can confirm that the initial paragraph does default to the Normal style, and now you can change the font characteristics of the style using Format --> Style --> (select a style) --> Modify. I have not puzzled out how to make a permanent change to the Normal style yet.)
