If you try running Html Tidy on the document Abiword *MIGHT* be able to open it. http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy/ Chances are better if you use html tidy to convert it to XHTML.
If Abiword cannot open proper XHTML documents that have been cleaned by html tidy then it is a problem and please file a bug including the file that Abiword cannot open.
