I've been thinking about this. This issue is pretty common on IRC. Now that we have code to automatically download spell files, could we go one step further and upload apsell files to sourceforge and make downloader clever enough to know if it should download an aspell or ispell hash?
Um, this would kinda mess up package management issues in many distros... so if you DO do this I would suggest s configure option to disable it.

But, in general I think this is not necessary:
1. If it had been documented at
http://www.abisource.com/help/en-US/info/infospelling.html
I would have known

2. I asked around in the Debian support channel on IRC, none of them knew. It was pointed out it was an the debian abiword page. My bad for not looking there, but it's not clear on the abiword page that pspell and ispell are two different compile-time options, or how aspell is related to pspell.

Hmm maybe we can compile both ispell and pspell into binaries and get abi to decide at run time which spell checker to use based on local availablity.
Hmm, on the one hand it might be cool if it could decide at runtime which to use... but then again what if a user wants to use pspell, but his install of pspell gets fscked, he doesn't know it, and abiword "falls back on ispell".... this is certainly gonna piss of those who understand the innerworkings of ispell vs pspell vs. aspell... just a thought.
