Hello Debbie

If you want to state 'unknown' in the report for a blank date field, 
use the IIf function in the control source of the date field.

Ex. if the date field is called rptDTE, write: =IIF(IsNull
([rptDTE]),"",[rptDTE])

or if you know the empty date field is returning an empty string "", 
then write:
=IIF([rptDTE]="","",[rptDTE])
