Debbie, If you want to enter the word "unknown" then you will need to have a text field data type. If you want to sort by date then you need to have a date field data type. You cannot have them both. By the mere absents of a date I would conclude it was not available or was not entered. You could put a hidden label next to the date field and when the form is closed query if the date is known please enter it else set the label Unknown to visible.
