Divya Nayan-A Personal Reading Machine For Visually Impaired Is Easily
Available To The Needy Across The Country Through Online Registration-
Dr. Jitendra Singh.
New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science &
Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; MoS
PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space,
Dr. Jitendra Singh today Divya Nayan is a personal reading machine for
visually impaired developed by CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments
Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh where any printed or digital documents
can be accessed in the form of speech output. The device is available
to visually impaired individuals and institutions through an online
registration and booking portal
https://divyanayan.csio.res.in/registration.php on its website.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Minister said
that based on the principle of contact scanning, it can analyze a
multi-column document and provide a seamless reading. Users can place
the device over the document to be read and manually scan it. The
reading device uses language-dependent optical character recognition
to convert the image into text and a text-to-speech converter further
converts the text into audio. Audio files are stored in the machine
and can be listened back. The device is handheld, standalone,
portable, completely wireless and IoT enabled. It is currently
available in Hindi, English, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and
Punjabi but is further compatible for other Indian and foreign
languages. It has interfaces such as USB, Bluetooth, Wifi, LAN,
Headphone, etc. The salient features of the device are as below:
Feature/s:
Wireless and Portable – standalone, completely wireless, and IoT enabled;
Multifunctional – read printed, e-books, e-news, recording, and reading speech;
Multilanguage – currently supports Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil,
Telugu, Kannada, and Punjabi;
Online Processing – document batch processing organisation;
Some of the other significant devices developed by CSIR for the
benefit of the common man are as below:
Myoelectric Hand for the persons having below the elbow amputation;
Electronic Knee for the persons having above-knee amputation;
Electronic Control Module for a powered wheelchair; and
3D Printed Orthosis for children with congenital hemiparesis.

 Inclusion The Motto
I just wanted to share something that I've been working on for quite a
while with you all.
It started out as a youtube channel known as "Inclusion The Motto",
the idea behind which was to bridge the gap between the blind and
sighted, to empower and educate sited folk on how we blind do various
things, to also hopefully try to reduce some of the not-too-great
ideologies they hold about us, all the stereotypes, etc. I often think
it is also the lack of knowledge and not ignorance that may lead to
such ideas or encounters.
I have tried to put this message across in all the videos I've
uploaded in an interactive and fun way, often having people on who's
had first-hand experience(either because they themselves are blind and
have managed to be quite successful in life or people directly
associated to blind folk who were able to give a much better insight
into how things work and clear many of the doubts that people have).
My content has always been for everyone to listen to, as some of the
tips given by the blind/VI people I interviewed proved to be quite
useful in our lives as well to tackle all the challenges that we face
on a daily basis.
However, recently I have started working on a brand new series of
sorts which I think will be especially useful for us folk who rely on
screen readers for our daily life tasks.
So quite often, at least here where I come from, I've come across this
mindset that us blind people cannot tackle higher-level mathematics
and science subjects, because they are too graphical, they cannot be
represented with a screen reader accurately enough and although this
may be true to an extent where extremely complicated geometric figures
or graphs are involved, things such as symbols and equations can be
written (and red) just fine.
What is sad is that here, many blind students start believing it as
well and give up on said subjects, dropping them entirely in high
school even if they wish to study them further. Either that, or they
end up going for a scribe(writer) to write their exams for them.
This is exactly what this series intends to improve.
I, myself, am a hundred percent blind student, have been by birth.
Therefore, I have a reasonably good idea of the challenges that come
into play when doing stem subjects on a computer with screen-reading
software. However, I did not drop them after 10th grade when we
usually get to select the subjects that we intend on pursuing for our
final two years of school; neither did I opt for a scribe. I was
interested in them, so I decided to take that leap into the unknown,
as it were.
I am very much happy to say that this is possible, and the
technologies that I got to discover along the way are what I will be
showing off in the series, as they are unfortunately not as well known
as they should be.
Therefore, please share the link of the channel around to people that
you know who might be in need of this; technology is improving day by
day and It is my hope that one day us blind kids will be able to
safely say that science and maths subjects are completely inclusive
and accessible, something that we can study without hassle along with
our sighted counterparts. However, this also requires determination,
as well as knowledge. The knowledge that I hope to impart from this
series, and the channel in general.
I hope you like it, and please do not hesitate to tell us what you
think in the comments section, feedback is what Inclusion The Motto is
all about.

Webinar on Kitchen Management
Have you ever tried preparing a delicious food item by yourself, but
your blindness prevented you from doing so and you start losing hope?
A grilled green sandwich or a pizza or stuffed paratha, which one
sounds most mouth-watering? which one you've tried to cook on your
own? Have tried cutting vegetables or fruits? Dared to make paneer or
butter or Ghee at home?
All this may sound complicated and challenging for the visually
impaired but is equally fun with a bit of hand-holding and practice.
Therefore, We will be bringing another unique and interesting webinar
on Kitchen management, where a group of experts will tell us how
cooking can be made enjoyable for us despite our sight loss.
To listen to such interesting dialogue and to learn the tips and
tricks, do visit our YouTube Channel
https://youtube.com/NABDelhiOnline
