Hi I thought of same but logically this link does not redirect to the actual endpoint where it would save our settings when we set basic HTML as default view. On the other hand, I totally second Ajay's point but if you are only using web version either you will have to keep your Gmail opened or use some mail client such as Outlook. But this basic hTML will load faster and helpful in urgent cases and especially if you want to modify some settings we do not want to load all the features which won't require.
