I have come to realize that the system perpetuates significant barriers for individuals with visual impairments, despite their capabilities. The exams, in particular, demonstrate a systemic failure to provide adequate accommodations for the blind. Our requests for assistive technology are consistently denied, even for basic features like inbuilt narrator. Furthermore, the scribes assigned to us often lack the necessary writing/typing skills, compromising the quality of assistance and ultimately, our career prospects. Even manageable sections in competitive exams become insurmountable due to the system's negligence and lack of reasonable timing adjustments. Scribe guidelines vary significantly across exam centers, adding to the confusion. In states like Rajasthan and Bihar, it's rare to find blind individuals in state government jobs, especially in Grade A and B positions, as well as assistant professor roles. The process of requesting scribe assistance in Rajasthan is cumbersome, with candidates required to physically report to the exam center days in advance, fill out medical forms, and await a committee's decision. I have personally faced numerous challenges in Rajasthan state government exams, and my friend, who writes with his feet, since he lost both his hands in an accident, was denied a necessary stool, forcing him to abandon the exam. It's essential to recognize that our hard work and efforts are futile if we rely on insensitive stakeholders. The blind intellectual community must come together to address this issue and advocate for fair and reasonable accommodations in all exams.
