Dear Friends,

We all have our own reservations on the UID (AADHAR) numbers. However,
it must be noted that this is going to change the shape of citizenry
identity in
our country in the near future. It is going to be more important and
vital for the millions of poor and marginalized sections for whom
entitlements are
critical even for their survival. The central and state governments are
going to stress on linking the AADHAR number for disbursement of any
social security
entitlements which has already began in a few states including
Maharashtra and Madya Pradesh. Even to open a simple bank account one
will need the AADHAR
number!!!

Earlier, Government of Madhya Pradesh (Dept of Food and Civil Supplies)
decided to link UID-Aadhaar Number as an essential criteria to receive
food entitlements
under PDS. In case of unavailability of UID with the beneficiary, PDS
grains were not to be given on ration card.

Over 20 million have been issued AADHAR numbers in the country.

What is UID and how to get it?
-UID is only a 12 digit number and there will be no cards issued.

-Biometry and eyeris information will be captured and it will be means
of identification.

-There are no other details on the number including SC, ST, OBC,
disability, HIV status etc recorded on the data.

-It is generated based on existing address proof, ID proof and
application.

-Aadhar number is only a citizen number and nothing else it is left to
various ministries and programmes how they will want to use to their
benefit.

-There is special drive enrolment camps organized to include disabled
people in the process.

-There is AADHAR issuing agencies in all the states including post
office, banks etc.

-Once you apply it will take around 15 days for the authority to issue
the Aadhar number which will be sent by post

best wishes

Praveen
