insert the windows xp CD in to the Cd drive and go to run and then type "SFC
/SCANNOW" excluding the quotes. then, simply press enter and wait until
your system verifies whether all required files are existed or not. if any
file is missing, it will be replaced/repaired if it is damaged. note: it
may takeseveral

I too, am facing a peculiar problem.....
I have installed Skype 3.8 and after using it a couple of times, it
automatically gets upgraded to version 5.5.
Can anyone tell me as to how to prevent the upgradation.

are you getting the same error which is told here? are any new symptom
appeared? if the same or any symptoms, reply back and I will diagnose
