Hi, Indeed such a gadget for door identification would really help to independently enter the right gate at home, or in office too if allowed. This would be specially helpful when there are many adjacent doors/gates and there is no good accessible landmark or clue to identify our door/gate. GPS does not work with such precision.
1. Perhaps, I would suggest the portable part that one would carry could indicate with sound or vibration or both, rather then the one which is installed on the door beeping and letting everyone around know that I have reached. Smile! 2. Also it would be useful to design in a way that if more than one person visit the place, more such portable parts could be configured with a particular installed piece. Or, the system uses a single protocol, so that if I have the portable one, and I visit a friend or an organisation which has installed this device on their gate, it can direct me. 3. Developing the wish list further, could it be possible that the portable part gives the first indication when I am say 50 metres away from the door, and then it keeps announcing the remaining distance in feet/metres as I approach it. Or it could beep faster as I approach. 4. If this vibrates as well, would be useful to deaf-blind people too. As I think more, I am wondering - Doesn't such a product/technology already exists? thanks, Pranay. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Geetha Shamanna" <gee...@millernorbert.de> To: <accessindia@accessindia.org.in> Sent: Thursday, December 29, 2011 12:43 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Wanted - ideas for accessible gadgets. Hi Vamshi, There used to be such a device at All India Confederation of the Blind in Delhi some years ago. I have no idea what the device was called, but it was battery-operated and Was attached to the gate. The device beeped continuously, orienting blind individuals trying to make their way to the institute. Perhaps a similar version of the device is available with a remote attachment? Please contact Mr. J. L. Kaul of the AICB for further details about the device. I'd like to have something which gives a signal when I reach my home. We know there are remote controls for motor bikes by which motor bikes make sound when it is pressed. Similarly I will keep the remote pressed when I enter my street and there should be a sound when I reach my home. I request all to speak their ideas on the list so that there can be improvements to each other's thoughts. Besides, we can know if there is a solution already available which we aren't aware of.
