Hi Shona,
For the Kurzweil problem, you can use NVDA's sleep mode feature (that
you can activate by pressing insert+shift+s).
It is a toggle, that is, it can be turned on and off with the same
keystroke, and can be used wherever you do not want NVDA to interfere
with your work.
