dear friends,
I too attended the M S excel course in Mitrajyothi in December last year. my
opinion is exactly opposite to that of Shreedhar's. before telling how it
was, let me acknowledge that Mitrajyothi has done a marvellous job in other
fields like talking books library, living skills training etc. especially,
the talking books library which the institute is providing from last one and
a half decades has gone a long way in enhancing the availability of reading
materials for the visually impaired students of Karnataka. thousand plus
students including myself have been greatly benefited from it. but this
course in M S Excel is different and not worth attending. it is mainly
because of it's instructor.
as I said earlier, I also attended that one week course in December but
learnt very little or nothing in the course from the instructor. Mr. Tony
Thomas, sorry to say the truth, is not a right person to be a teacher or
instructor.
from the day one, I felt unsatisfied since I could not learn what I
expected. the course was named 'Advanced course in M S Excel'. but we were
diverse group as per the knowledge in excel is concerned. there were some
who did not know the basics of excel. we had to sit idle until they are
taught the basics. I explained the problem to him and he assured that he
would split the batch into groups according to needs and give the
instructions as per their phase of learning from the next day. but it was
not realized on the next day. ☺he gave many such assurances which never
realized. on my second day, we requested for some changes in the pattern of
instruction in terms of schedule regarding verbal explanation and practice
sessions (theory and practicals). he agreed. it was also a never implemented
assurance. many of us needed much more time for practice. but even after
continuous requests, it was not provided. we were tired of long instruction
sessions from morning about 10 to evening 6:30 or 7, and some days until
8:00. once he said that extension in the evening is optional to students.
but he continued having regular instructions and discussions in the evening
making it inevitable for us to sit. as a result, we were unable to complete
the exercises that were given to us.
another problem was that he was teaching some personality related things
also. it is the fate of many courses our NGOs offer. they do not want to
teach one thing properly. they want to teach everything together. after
reading this mail one may call me a rude person. but it is true that I have
enough level of personality and it has been proved by my surroundings: my
friends, colleagues, students, and others. so, this personality related
instruction which consumed hours together in each day was a significant
unwanted part of the programme for me and some others. one day he spent
about 2 hours telling only about himself. was it all needed? certainly not,
at least for me.
he was asking us to play some fun games and we used to spend about one to
two hours in a day. I am not against games. I know they are relaxing and
refreshing. but we have to do all those when we really need relaxation and
refreshment. it should not overtake the main activity. some days he was
playing with us in the morning in beginning hours only. is it right?
one more problem was the unnecessary intervention caused by a fellow
student/teacher by name Anjaneyulu. he was both a student and teacher. it is
true that he did not know the things properly, but he was not keeping
himself quiet. we wanted a direct discussion with our teacher Mr. Tony, but
his unwanted intervention was disturbing us very much and Mr. Tony was also
not instructing Anjaneyulu to reduce intervention.
when I used to ask doubts/questions, Mr. Tony would often say that it was a
silly question. twice he said that my questions were stupid ones. I had
asked "what is the advantage of scenario manager over usual copying and
manually checking the different values?". I felt hurt by his remark "stupid"
for a humble question. I don't say as a teacher, he should know A to Z. but
when he doesn't know answer for a question, he has to admit it openly or
else ask us to explore ourselves. as a teacher, I too have faced such
situations and all those times, I frankly accepted my lack of knowledge.
what would he feel if I call him a "stupid teacher" who discourages such a
right question? I did not want to disrespect him as my teacher. but here I
have to tell the truth. according to me, one who discourages students'
questioning nature unless it is intentionally disturbing, is a bad teacher
since it hinders the learning process.
he was fond of few students who kept quiet in the sessions without asking
many questions, or those who were praising him continuously. once he was
said to have told one such student that he was tolerating me and some others
as we would be there only for few days. one thing needs to be clear, whether
it was he or we who were tolerating, his irritative instructions and
remarks?
let me clarify one thing here. as an assistant professor in a university, I
have lot of work load. I did not join the course simply to spend the time.
with an intension and hope of learning something new, I opted for the
course. during that week, my higher authority called me twice and told me to
attend the examination duty the next day. even after all my effort to
convince, they were of the same stand and straightly instructed me to do the
duty. remember, I am in my probationary period. if any thing wrong about me
reaches the top authority, it does not care to remove me from my job. we
have also seen such examples where few of our colleagues were removed off
their job for some small reasons. even having such a threat from the
immediate higher authority, I stayed back in this excel course. did I do all
this just to spend time? one thing is clear here, my job is very important
for me. I stayed back in the course in spite of threatening risk in my work
place to learn something new in excel. in such a situation, the time I spent
was very significant for me. when it was wasted, I felt disturbed. according
to Mr. Tony, only those silent people were passionate learners and we were
mischievous. I think I faced all the above risk just to do mischief in his
class. probably I did not have any place to do that in Tumkur, my work
place.
until the last day, I waited in the hope that he would correct. but he did
not. in the last session while taking feedback, he asked me for my feedback.
when I was telling about the problems he faced in the course due to this
heterogeneous group and others, he stopped me in between and gave negative
remarks upon me by saying that I think only through my brain and he thinks
and acts more with his heart than his brain. if I am such a kind of person,
why did he ask for my feedback at all? probably to comment upon me.
moreover, I don't know whether there are things in excel that we have to do
using our heart rather than our brain. dear Tony Sir, I too am a human
being, and has a heart and, that too works.
I know Shreedhar. I don't know why he has given such a beautiful opinion on
the course. probably he was under some pressure or obligation to give
positive opinion.
so, dear members, if you want to join the proposed course, please review my
statements objectively and make decision. if you know the fundamentals of
computer and M S Excel, I advise you not to join the course as you are not
likely to learn anything new. hope the moderator does not ban me for the
bitter but true remarks.
