Yes, text file does not retain anything but pure text. However, I have
downloaded the adobe digital edition from Prashant's link. It is working
fine.
The zamzer web site converts epub files to pdf and txt, not html. However,
mp3 and some other formats are also available.

Converting epub files to text may be accessible; but it is not an
efficient solution.
Epub files are a set of HTML files. So change the file extension of
epub to “zip”; (rar does not work). Open with WinZip; still best is
WinRAR because it extracts all the interlinked files when one html is
extracted. Understand folder structure; open files named --talk.html;
index.html. I read most of the epub files like this; however, DRM
protected epub files cannot be read in this way.

You can also use Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 to read epub files on both
Windows and Mac with virtual buffer like functionality for screen readers.
iBooks on iOS works well.
Victor Reader doesn't read epub by default. You will need to buy the £50
soft pack.

You can read epub files on a number of platforms.
1. The pc has qread but that does not keep the structure of the file.
2. Android has the Ideal web reader.
3. I believe iBooks works on IOS.
4. The victor reader stream can also read epub files.
