We often hear the sayng, "Service to the humanity is service to the divinity". Keeping this in mind, a group of enthusiastic individuals led by one of my schoolmates, S. Kamal Basha, started an NGO called A.P. Voluntary Organisation for People's Relief in 2005. Within a short period of four years, in 2009, they started an Orphan Physically Handicapped Centre at Agadi Street, Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.
The Centre accommodates about thirty inmates--some of them are educated unemployed while the others are uneducated adults whom the Organisation locates from different parts of Andhra Pradesh from time to time. The inmates are encouraged to acquire as many skills as possible. These include braille literacy, computer operating, cooking, making of candles, incense sticks, phenol, etc. Some of them secured jobs as teachers and many others in banks. The inmates of the Centre are active users of TALKS-compatible 2nd and 3rd generation Nokia phones and PC's with screen readers like JAWS and NVDA. They experiment with various softwares like clocks, call recorders, games, etc. They are also fond of web surfing; they read online Telugu newspapers using eSpeak. Besides, the Centre also functions as a cyber cafe and an information hub for the local blind students and employees, where books, TALKS-compatible second-hand Nokia handsets, softwares and expertise are freely shared, downloaded and exchanged. On the occasion of the Republic Day, for the second consecutive year, the General Secretary of the A.P. Voluntary Organisation for People's Relief, S. Kamal Basha was awarded a citation by the District Collector.
