Hello,
I have used talking ATM of Union Bank of India and according to me,
Talking ATMs are very much accessible and user friendly as per the
needs of Visually Impaired/Blind users.

The moment one inserts headphone into ATM machine, the IVR gets
started and guides throughout operation and stops when headphone is
removed from it. The bilingual voice is very much clear with
comfortable speed and accent.

Presently, SBI AND Union Bank of India are two banks in India
installing talking ATMs that too with a slow pace. However, their
commitment to install thousands of such ATMs in near future are very
much promising considering the huge cost and efforts involved in these
projects. So, I believe that we must appreciate these initiatives and
cheer up a steady growth despite the slow pace.

Please find below the guidelines for using Talking ATM of Union Bank of India.

HEADPHONE RECOMMENDED -
A 3.5 mm universal standard headphone jack provided on A T M face.
Please use a standard headphone. We do not recommend use of mobile

HOW TO FIND HEADPHONE JACK ON A T M -
When you stand in front of an A T M machine at around your waist
height on the right hand side on the face of the A T M find a raised
universal symbol of a headphone. This headphone symbol is like a half
circle. Just next to this symbol on the right side you have a
headphone jack.
BRAILLE STICKERS -
Braille labels are put in at positions where A T M label slots are
available to locate A T M parts. Braille labels are using Braille
contractions. Following Braille labels are available
RECEIPT - above this Braille label you will find receipt printer slot.
CASH - below this Braille label you will find money outlet or cash
dispenser slot.
CARD - above this Braille label you will find a protruded card insertion slot.
A T M KEYPAD -
A T M Keypad is a standardize telephone matrix layout. As per
universal design standard number 5 on a keypad has a raised dot.
Number 1 is diagonally above on the top left side and number 9 is

Keypad Function keys - Additional function keys Clear, Cancel and
Enter are at the right side of number keys 3, 6 and 9. These function
keys are having unique identifications like color and raised symbols.
CLEAR key - This is a yellow color key on the keypad. Use Clear key if
you have made a mistake while entering the A T M PIN or cash

can now enter new data. It will not delete characters but clears whole
entered data.

used any time during the A T M operation to cancel current A T M
operation. Remember once you press the Cancel key you need to wait for
some time as canceling operation and setting back A T M to welcome
screen will take some time. Approximately 20 seconds or more. The
Cancel key is used only if the user needs to cancel operation. In the
normal operation we do not need to use the Cancel key. You will need
to remove and re-insert the headphone plug to restart talking mode and
a transaction after A T M canceling operation.
3
ENTER key - This is a green color key on the keypad. Enter key is used
during the A T M operation to confirm and proceed. For example after
entering A T M PIN and after entering cash withdrawal amount, etc.
A T M CARD SLOT -
An A T M card slot is protruding in front of the actual flat surface
of the A T M face. A dip card reader slot is where you slide your card
in and out. Generally a card slot also has prominent light indicator
which blinks all the time. This is a useful indication for a low or
poor vision user.
A TYPICAL A T M CARD -
An A T M card is a plastic card. Its size is that of a visiting or
business card dimension. Generally the A T M card has the bank name
and card number on the top face. Some cards also have embossed account
holder name. Important part on your card is a magnetic strip which is
a black color strip which is at the rear face of your A T M card.
Magnetic tape is a sensitive part of your A T M card which is mainly
read by the A T M. You need to take care of your A T M card by
avoiding any scratches and cracks.
HOW TO HOLD AND INSERT AN A T M CARD -
An individual can find clues by feeling the A T M card and learn how
to insert it in a right direction. Clues can be tactile like raised
numbers or characters or some distinct mark on the card. You can feel
the numbers or symbols which are raised or embossed and remember their
direction while inserting your card in the card slot. You need to hold
your card flat in a vertical direction i.e. short edge of card at card
slot side and longer edges to left and right sides. Slide your card
in, wait for 3 to 5 seconds and slide it out
HOW TO USE DIP CARD -
Insert A T M card in the right direction and then wait for 3 to 5
seconds. Then remove your card. You can put it back into your pocket.
Once your A T M card is read properly by the machine, the next screen
will be, Enter Your PIN. In case of talking A T M, Insert your card,
audio prompt repeats once. If you have not inserted your card
correctly you can hear the message as, Sorry cannot read your card.
Please insert Your Card Properly.
TEXT TO SPEECH (TTS) -
This talking A T M is using text-to-speech technology to read aloud
text from A T M screens and orientation message. Good Indian accent
TTS voices are used for English and Hindi for talking functionality of
the A T M.
4
TIPS ON TALKING A T M TRANSACTIONS:
Presently the following 3 transactions are offered on the A T M when
you are using talking mode in English and Hindi.
- PIN change
- Balance Enquiry
- Cash withdrawal
A T M PIN -
Keypad numbers 0 to 9 and function keys Clear, Cancel and Enter are
not spoken but they will echo beep sound when pressed.
Once you have entered your PIN you need to press the Enter key to proceed.
If a wrong PIN is entered, the A T M will allow you to continue your A
T M operation but finally it will give an error for wrong PIN entered.
PIN entered is shown on the screen in symbols cross cross cross cross
for a four digit PIN. This will be shown only if you are using show
display option.
A T M PIN change operation can also be done on talking A T M.
BALANCE ENQUIRY -
Once you select balance enquiry transaction option and your account
type A T M will read aloud your current balance. No receipt print will
come out in balance enquiry.
CASH WITHDRAWAL -
Listen to the A T M machine’s various sounds when cash is dispensed.
You can hear series of sounds as cash is rolled, counted and finally
comes out of the cash dispenser.
Remember cash is partly held by the machine. So you need to pull it
out properly and gently. Make sure you grip all the notes and not just
a few. A beeping sound will alert you to the presence of the notes. In
case these notes are not pulled out in time, they will be pulled back
into the machine after 15 seconds.
There is a maximum limit for withdrawing cash at one time.
It is always recommended by banks to break up your transactions in
smaller lots. For example in order to withdraw rupees 20,000 you can
withdraw it in 3 lots: 7000, 8000 and 5000 rupees of cash withdrawals.
So you need to perform total three cash withdrawal operations.
Amount entry is in single digits. Examples of audio announcement are,
one rupee, ten rupees, hundred rupees, thousand rupees, ten thousand
rupees, etc.
If you wish to re-confirm the entered amount, wait for few seconds it
will be announced automatically.
You can hear a thank you message, to know transaction is completed.
5
RECEIPT -
After collecting the cash your receipt will come out of the receipt
printer if you have asked for it. So keep your hand below the receipt
printer slot after collecting your cash from cash dispenser. The audio
clues of A T M receipt printing can be heard.
You can hear a thank you message, to know transaction is completed.
NEW OR RESTART A T M OPERATION -
Once you finish one transaction the A T M takes approximately 20
seconds to reset. A T M resets and gets ready for a fresh transaction.
Remove headphone plug once you are through with the A T M transaction
if you are using the headphone.
Remember you need to first re-insert the headphone plug to start the A
T M Talking mode if you wish to do more transactions.
ERRORS DURING A T M OPERATION -
Listen to the error messages carefully. Few examples of A T M error
messages are
- This A T M is Out of Service
- This A T M is currently being serviced. We regret inconvenience caused
QUICK MODE OF OPERATION FOR TALKING A T M -
For any A T M transaction first you need to insert a headphone jack to
enable the A T M talking mode.
In the future to speed up the A T M transactions, directly insert your
A T M card. It will go into hide screen mode and will ask you to enter
your A T M PIN. Default language selection will be English.
Once you are familiar with the talking A T M and if you wish to save
your transaction time you can directly start A T M operation after
inserting the headphone jack and then by inserting the card.
Direct insertion of card bypasses initial choices of language, volume
control and hide or display screen.
A T M ACCESS LOCK -
In general the A T M site has an access lock at the A T M door. Access
lock is a safety measure for an A T M room for avoiding unauthorized
access. While entering into the A T M room you need to insert your A T
M card into the slot to open access lock. While exiting from the A T M
