Subject: Altavista search engine by e-mail

Hello all,

Lately I received some personal e-mail from people on this list asking
me how to search for documents on the web by e-mail.

Mostly I use the Altavista search engine.

This can be done by using <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

For help:

  TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  SUBJECT: send help

The above service is fast and will get you 10 URLs.

If I want more than 10 URLs I usually send search strings to one of
the following www4mail servers:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the body of the message are the below boolean search strings. In
the below case I'm searching for documents containing the words
"thunder" AND "lightning". Substitute the words "thunder" and
"lightning" for words of your own choice.

%22 tells Altavista to do an exact search on the words "thunder" and
"lightning."

The first string will send me the URLs of the first 10 documents.

The second string, ending with &stq=10&c9k will send me the URLs of
documents 10 through 20.

The third string ending with &stq=20&c9k will get me the URLs of
documents 20 through 30.

Etc. etc.

You may add as many search strings as you like. Keep in mind you will
use up your quota at the www4mail servers though.

get http://www.altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=aq&text=yes\
&q=%22thunder%22+AND+%22lightning%22

get http://www.altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=aq&text=yes\
&q=%22thunder%22+AND+%22lightning%22&stq=10&c9k

get http://www.altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=aq&text=yes\
&q=%22thunder%22+AND+%22lightning%22&stq=20&c9k

get http://www.altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=aq&text=yes\
&q=%22thunder%22+AND+%22lightning%22&stq=30&c9k

A lot more information on this subject can be found in Gerry Boyd's
tutorial on the Altavista search engine. I understand there will be an
updated version in a few months time.

Get it by Agora:

  send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsalta.faq

Hello Accmailers,

Sorry if this question has already been answered many times on this list.

Last year, I received some PostScript (.ps) files, and of course I could
not read them.
Now I asked for GhostScript, and I received it, but it is compressed with
tar_gz.

How can i decode these files?
Were can I get the un-tar program?

Thank you,

 Operating with MS-DOS 6.2, how do I read `charset="iso-8859-1"'?

 > Mime-Version: 1.0

 > Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Recently I've received an increasing number of email messages
with the same sort of garble, obviously a code that I'm not
using. Some, though not all of it, has the above in the header.
(I deleted a NULL character from the beginning of each line, on
the assumption that its purpose is to prevent it from showing
 on many readers.)

The code I can't read comes as a string of one or more trios of
characters, so that the first character is always an `=', the
second is an alphabetic character in CAPS, and the third is a
numeral. Sometimes it seems to represent punctuation marks
sprinkled in an otherwise normal message, other times the entire
message body comes that way, typically in blocks exactly 192
characters wide. That is exactly three times 64, (a more normal
page width) which supports my assumption that each triplet is
 intended to represent one character.

In some messages, only a few of those triplets are sprinkled in,
but in others, they make up the entire body of a long messsage.

You may try to use XUUENCODE command for www4mail.

The site still has problems. Out of 5 requests I sent yeterday, I
received one bounce and 4 results. It's not truly ready for "prime
time". I think the developers are still having problems.

I'll admit that they are adding features at a rapid pace -- it
seems as though a new one is added every other week, but
unfortunately, the bounces occur tooooooooo frequently. I have
never had a "perfect" week.

Also, I guess I'm still of the old school, I'd rather have a
dependable Agora and Getweb server rather than all the fancy
integreated-browser actions with www4mail. I know it sounds like
I'm always complaining, but with the Agoras and Getwebs I never had
the problems that I do with the www4mail servers. I even have
better luck with gophermail.

With NODIGEST you don't get digests -- you get individual messages.
If you want the set DIGEST then:

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Message:
SET ACCMAIL DIGEST

Or, to set NODIGEST

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Message:
SET ACCMAIL NODIGEST

If you look at the bottom of the results you'll see something like
this:

[ 1 2 [45] 3 [46] 4 [47] ...

Those are the next pages of search results. Looking at the
references from the document you'll see something like this:

45.
http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?896iajkldjfwjhgjhkljklavjklwev\
asdlkfjklds;klweaj;irweaoh;dsa;hgljhdskglhdsakfl;jdsfkljdsaf;kljdsaflk

Just send that URL to www4mail or something and you'll get the page
you want (in this case, page 2).

People have mentioned how to use the digest mode. A more concise
mode can be had by using SET ACCMAIL INDEX:

INDex/NOINDex
-------------

Causes the you to receive one posting per digest cycle containing only an
index of subject topics for all messages during that cycle. Instructions
on how to retrieve the individual postings are included with the index.
See the section on DIGEST (above) for further information.

(as the INFO GEN command will tell you.)

Almost invariably this indicates that the message was sent with
MIME encoding turned on and most likely with an M$ E-mail program.
Netscape and Eudora do the same. It turns out that these are the
default options.

The only way to read these messages is with a MIME-capable E-mail
program. You can have the sender change the charset to US-ASCII.

Pegasus for DOS and Pine for DOS will read/send MIME.

It's a Unix TAR file that has been archived with Unix gzip.
So you need both a un-gzip and an un-tar program.
