I bet it truncates for some!

In an off list discussion, it was noted that 99% of the truncation for
one user was at the end of my sig. Ny sig has a dot at the end, to force
truncation on some servers, that is NOT needed for this list.

Gerry, if you see a dot after my sig to this list, and you can not remove
it, bounce the post. I will try to remember to remove that dot, or not
sign posts, to this list.

Without getting a little irritated at this suggestion, let me explain
why I probably won't do this.
I approve 20-25 postings a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. I took
over this list in October 1997 and have never missed a day of approvals
or moderation. I have to limit all time-off to a single 24-hr period.
I haven't had an extended vacation since 1992 when I was gone for 9
weeks. 1994 I got a whole 2 weeks off. Since that time -- zero.

I sent a version off list, but just for the reference of the list: It
appears that the text has the high bit set on all characters. By
stripping the file of the high bit, I got some thing that was closer to
readable. Unfortunately, the software, likely at this end, changed some
of the characters, making it still hard to read, for the most part.
There are a lot of utilities out that can do this stripping. I used a
text file viewer, that happened to have that option.

Subject: Suggestion to "Senhor" Gerry Boyd

Dear Gerald,
I have read your answer to the thread above, and, while I find what
you say extremely correct and I agree with you on the general
'selfish' attitude of most people on the web (most, not all) there's
something in your words that scares me.

You write:
> I haven't had an extended vacation since
>1992 when I was gone for 9 weeks. 1994
>I got a whole 2 weeks off. Since that time -- zero.

This is very very silly. I could not believe that a clever person like
you would have chosen such an absurd behavior.
While I can understand your pride and your joy in doing everyday
something extremely useful for the whole community (and you ARE doing
something extremely useful, stemming frills and putting back some
content on this increasing useless web of frills) I cannot condone
such a 'Stakanovistical' attitude.

Take vacations (more than once every year) as often as you can. We
will miss you, of course, but we will all still be there when you are
back, and maybe you'll let a little of the stress you are feeling off.

No-one should renounce to a couple of months vacations every year. We
are all here -you too- to ENJOY the web and life, not to be enslaved
by the web to the point of wasting our lifes on it.

Just my two cents, of course, and you probably wont agree with me, yet
I feel that I had to tell you what I believe.
Once more: I love what you are doing, and I'll try to give you on the
ACCMAIL list some of the help you are correctly asking for, but if you
don't take (at least) your 60 days vacations every year, as all human
beings should do, I personally will like you and your work a little
less, not a little more.

Besides there's nothing like a long vacation from the web or a broken
leg in grips to realize how curiously persistent and at the same time
ephimerous this virtual world of ours is.

At the rate requests keep popping up on the list about how to access
web-based email, there may be a need to have an 'Accessing email" FAQ, as
distinct from "Acessing the internet by email"!

It must be emphasized that it is _not_ possible to access web-based email
services off-line, not even with utilities like cwebmail or sweetmail.
These programs all require a live TCP connect to the internet. Nor can you
retrieve/post your email through the webmail servers, despite claims to the
contrary (awhile ago on this list).

Any search engine will throw up plenty of listings of free email providers
on the web; even a few that provide POP3/SMTP services, all quite useless
unless you do have at least shell access to the internet or deep pockets for
long-distance telephone charges.

Obvious? Apparently not to everyone!

Hi,all!

I'm looking for the free e-mail service available both by web and POP &
SMTP.
So, I have one already ( http://freemail.org.mk , [EMAIL PROTECTED] )
, all is correct besides one thing:
the disk quota for each user is 2000000 bytes, maximum length of a message
is
500000 bytes.
I'd like to have at least 4-5 MB as disk quota.
Unlike, many good services (Yahoo, HotMail etc.) aren't available by POP &
SMTP. :-(
The CWebMail does not work throught proxy server if HTTP is off on server by
sysadmin :-( .

Can anyone tell (or send me this info if someone has) me where I can read
about such services including the disk quota for each user, maximum length
of a message and what I have to write as POP and SMTP server in my e-mail
program.
I'm interesting ONLY in free and good e-mail.

All the best,
Dmytro Pavlov, Ukraine.

Dearest Mary (and others),

Well there's always a little more to a story than would first appear. I
didn't really want to write a life story here but let me add a few things.

The complaints by me were to show that many other events are happening
other than just my answers to this list. Asking me to do "one" more
thing is just burdensome. I do things when I want to or when I'm
intrigued by the subject matter.

Secondly, I'm also a part-time college teacher so vacations are limited
to when I can get away from college -- which lately hasn't been too
much because of the third item.

Third, I retired from systems programming in July 1998 after 34 years
so I now have much more time to devote to my home PC. So my teaching
duties have increased because "I'm retired" -- that is, they want me to
become a full-timer in teaching. However, this I refused to do, but
then I agree to teach "one" more and "one" more class.

It's hard to explain, but I have been in love with computers forever. I
have never regretted my career choice. The teaching was always a
part-time thing that has evovled to 20-year "side" career - which I
also truly love to do. I just can't/don't want to give it up. It's a
wonderful feeling to be in front of a classroom -- I love love love it.
Besides, it's good for me because it forces me to stay on top of the
learning curve. I have taught and learned more subjects related to
computers than I ever did at my work place.

Lastly, since all three of my daughters are grown up and gone on their
ways, a vacation just lacks the same feeling. My wife agrees. Going
camping is just not the same any more. She and I are perfectly content
to remain at home. She does her thing and I do mine. That is, extended
vacations just don't hold the same appeal anymore. Day to day events
are just fine.

I have been addicted to PCs since I built a kit in the 70s. I have
never been without at least one machine since that time. Since June
1994 it has been truly a wonderful time for me and I don't regret any
of it. I just moan when somebody asks me to do "one" more thing. One
and one and one more just adds up to a lot of things. I was just trying
to put in perspective what all the "ones" added up to.

Anyway, don't dislike me because I don't take a vacation. Actually, I'm
now on a continuous vacation but it's one of my choosing -- I love
being "retired" (:>)

Well you weren't the only one that had a "." period in column 1, mea
culpa (:>)
It just so happened that you had the most <gr>. Many other postings
also had one.

Can't you setup an alternate or second signature for your E-mail
program? I sure don't want to start bouncing mail from you. It just
ends up as "one" more thing to do -- and I don't need "one" more thing.
Besides that, I like your answers (:>)

I don't have a clue because I don't use either program. What I said
before still stands, I don't know how they are added but I'd be willing
to bet it has something to do with the installation programs.

MSIE and Outlook express were on this new Win 98 machine when I
purchased it. I added Pegasus first and tried it for a while. I then
added Eudora then TheBat!. However, Pegasus doesn't show in the list I
mentioned -- only Eudora, Outlook, and TheBat!

Serial Line IP (SLIP) was created first and is defined in RFC1055, A
Nonstandard for Transmission of IP Datagrams Over Serial Lines.

This is a miniumn protocol that allows host computers to link via TCP/IP
over a telephone line. The SLIP protocol uses a simple method for
"framing" IP datagrams for transmission over serial lines. SLIP sends
the datagrams across the serial line as a series of bytes, framed by two
special byte sequences. The SLIP "end" character (decimal 92) marks the
end of a datagram. The SLIP "esc" character (decimal 219) is used to
"escape" the SLIP control characters.

If the sending SLIP sees either of these two characters, it converts the
character to a sequence of two characters -- ESC 220 for the END
character and ESC 221 for the ESC character itself. When the receiving
SLIP encounters these two characters, it converts them back to
single-byte values. This prevents the receiving SLIP from incorrectly
interpreting a data byte as the end of a datagram.

Two deficiences in SLIP are identified by RFC1055:
1) The SLIP protocol doesn;t define any link control information that
can be used to dynamically control the characteristics of the
connection.
2) SLIP doesn't compensate for noisy, low-speed telephone lines.

PPP was developed to accomodate these two weaknesses and is defind in
RFC1171, The Point-To-Point Protocol for the Transmission of
Multi-Protocol Datagrams Over Point-To-Point Links and RFC1172, The
Point-To-Point (PPP) Initial Configuration Options.

PPP addresses the weknesses of SLIP with a three-layered protocol:
1) Data Link Protocol
2) Link Control Protocol (LCP)
3) Network Control Protocols (NCP)

PPP is a more robust protocol, but it is more difficult to implement.

I didn't find anything on distributed database, but a search on
database turned up 87 mailing lists. To get your own listing from
which to chose from, send E-mail as follows:
