I can confirm this bug does not afflict ubuntu only, but it's confirmed for the linux-kernel (the main one!) too. I've read somewhere that's an awful problem to debug, since at the time the system freezes there's no place to store a log, since it's the last action before shutdown: all mounts are unmounted, all memory is freed and so on. I remember I read about someone who had recompiled something (cant remember if it was the kernel or only the halt bin) to let some logs out of a serial attached, but since this seems to affect mainly laptops, and especially new laptops, this is not a path to be easily followed by the standard user who want to give a hand. I mean, this is absolutely and definetly annoying, since I tried all the DSDT stuff that pilipix suggested, but none worked.
And I read there are a lot of "me too", but there are also very few who submits their hw e sw specs: this won't help in no way. Pongi @ laptop CoreDuo, ICH7 (PackardBell V7908).
