does the problem still exist without any acpi_osi boot options?
can you change the backlight via /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness in
this case?

it seems that the ACPI video driver invokes PBLS to change the backlight,
doesn't this work when ATKD._STA returns 0?
