Now using patched 2.6.38.6-26. I can sometimes reach Rl3, sometimes RL 5 using
proprietary NVIDIA driver.
With acpi=off everything is fine
Without acpi=off I get random soft lockups during boot or while watching the
kernel log output via CRTL-ALT-F10
I use a 1650*1080 Framebuffer, yet the log is too long to be read. 
I read using serial output might be a solution, so I ordered a RS 232 crossover
cable and a usb adapter for a second pc. I will enable the serial console and
hope to able to deliver the error messages
