First of All, let me say thank you Neil. Your support has been awesome and if their was a super star of Active Directory message board it should be you! In case anyone is having similar issues, I forgot to say that I am in Native Mode.
I deleted the one under PDC2, left the default and let it stand for the night. This morning I ran dcdiag.exe on both and everything passed and looked right except. These errors/descrepencies: DCDIAG.EXE ------------ PDC ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Starting test: frssysvol Error: No record of File Replication System, SYSVOL started. The Active Directory may be prevented from starting. ......................... PDC passed test frssysvol Starting test: kccevent An Warning Event occured. Server is not responding or is not considered suitable. ......................... PDC2 failed test Advertising Starting test: frssysvol Error: No record of File Replication System, SYSVOL started. The Active Directory may be prevented from starting. I think there are two things going on here. 1. I looked on PDC2 and there is no SYSVOL folder, I am thinking that the consultants may have deleted it and made it a NETLOGON folder, because they did not understand active directory and replication and the fact that windows 2000 servers can authenticate in more than one place (have DUN installed on PDC2). It says may be preventing AD from starting? Advise on rebuilding? 2. I need to reestablish Under PDC2 Server in Sites and Active Directory a new active directory connection. I did a little reading and from what I am understanding you basically want to have a PDC connection to replicate to PDC2 and another one to replicate PDC2 to PDC. Interestingly enough it seems that my default is set to grab the fully name from PDC and it replicates from PDC2. So I would think under my new connection I would want it to grab the name from PDC2 and replicated it from PDC. 3. Another issue is that it looks like DNS is not installed on PDC2, but from what I understand about DNS it should only have to be on one machine. I also examined GC and it looked fine to me. Thanks again Neil, really apreciate your help. -Bryan Schlegel -----Original Message----- From: Neil Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, November 04, 2001 4:45 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] dcdiag.exe - Help!!! Bryan, >From what you've said dns seems ok. A GC simply contains commonly used information which can be used for searching and other white pages type operations - as an example. If you have multiple domains within the same forest each GC will contain a 20% partial replica set of each domain for the reasons outlined above. In your Sites and Services mmc I'd delete the replication link that says's it has an error with pdc2 - this link may of got 'stuck' while the other operation was taking place for some reason (dns?) and the kcc hasn't been able to clean up. You can create a manual rep. link using the same mmc interface - right click, new ad connection. Once you've done this let the machines figure out what's going on and try dcdiag again. See what results you get.... Neil, Thanks for the advise. I really appreciate it. 1. Checked DNS on pdc and the forwarder points to PDC2 by name. Looks like all records are in place. 2. Can browse PDC2 from PDC using net use, \\PDC2 , etc. 3. Looked in DNS apparently the PDC is a GC? Not sure exactly what a GC is. Can I set up new NTDS settings and new active directory replications? Not sure exactly how these should be set up either. Right now in the schema it looks like this. AD Sites and Services -Default first names -Servers -PDC2 NTDS Settings Server PDC2 replicates from Server PDC2 - RPC error -PDC Echange Settings ADS settings NTDS Settings Auto generated replicate from Server PDC2 - naming context being removed. I think it should look like this....since I want PDC to be master of operations.. -Default first names -Servers -PDC2 NTDS Settings Server PDC2 replicates from PDC -PDC Echange Settings ADS settings NTDS Settings Server Auto generated Replicate from PDC2 Thanks this is driving me crazy, I wish I knew what was done to get it to this point. Thanks all for the input. -Bryan -----Original Message----- From: Neil Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, November 02, 2001 2:30 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] dcdiag.exe - Help!!! Bryan, Ok, so the KCC is unable to create a rep. link between the two machines - underlying problem is that PDC is unable to contact PDC2 using RPC. Have you checked the dns setup on both machines? By this I mean, does the dns server that your PDC machine is registering with contain the correct records for PDC2? Are you able to browse PDC2 using explorer or net use ? In the first error message - PDC says, "The naming context is in the process of being removed or is not replicated from the specified server" PDC2 says "The following RPC server is not available" (RPC running as a service) A naming context is being removed -> what change did you make ? Was the PDC machine once a GC and you have removed this ? Once the RPC error message goes away the kcc will create a connections between each machine - inbound and outbound for replication. If you can't wait for a couple of kcc cycles to pass, create a manual connection object between each server using the Sites and Services mmc, sync the configuration replica using repadmin or replmon support tools. Hi there, Inhereted from consultants and I know there is issues with the way they set up AD, so trying to back peddle here. I am hoping someone can help and looked through previous postings to no avail. Here are the specs, two servers. PDC and PDC2 (BDC). Both running AD windows server 2000 with SP 2 and updates. PDC has exhange 2000 with all service packs. I think it was set up using the AD tool. I ran dcdiag.exe on both machines and here were the results. When I try to replicate the NTDS settings to PDC2 I get an error. Both are added as servers in Default-First-Name in actived directory manager. PDC says, "The naming context is in the process of being removed or is not replicated from the specified server" PDC2 says "The following RPC server is not available" (RPC running as a service) Any advise on infastructure or what is going wrong, I would be great!
