The version of DNS Server on NT4 does not support everything that AD requires,
specifically SRV records. You'll need a more capable DNS server for that, such as the
one that ships with Win2K Server. If you have other computers configured to point to
your existing PDC for DNS, I'd suggest that you build a seperate Win2K server, add
DNS, and migrate yor DNS server over there (including pointing the clients to it of
course). Point the PDC to thie new server for DNS as well. Then you should be ready
to go.

Tip - get the latest version of dcdiag.exe from microsoft.com, and use it with the
/dcpromo switch before you try to promote your server. It checks to make sure that
the server will be able to find an adequate DNS server and register SRV records with
it. That way you can be sure the environment is ready to go before you start.

Note - I'm not sure if this works on a machine running NT4, such as your PDC that you
plan to upgrade. It's handy for a clean install starting with a Win2K server, though,
as well as for adding DCs to an existing domain. In the latter case, presumeably a
proper DNS server is available (or the existing DCs wouldn't work), but it assures you
that the server you're about to promote has its IP configured properly and it'll be
able to find the domain.

Subject: [ActiveDir] DNS

In my lab we have an NT 4.0 BDC running DNS and when I upgraded our NT 4.0
PDC to Win2k and go through the AD wizard, it tells me that DNS is not
available. Do I need to have the PDC in the DNS table prior to upgrading?
