So what is the impact of placing DNS servers at each remote location? Significant? Or minimal? (given connections are all greater than 256k frame)

I believe you are correct. Additionally, though, I don't think DNS replication traffic is all that considerable. The worst data hog in DNS is the resolver cache, which isn't replicated.
