Try the following:

a. Configure the IP stack of the W2K3 server to point to itself for DNS
b. Do NOT create any zones
c. Allow the DCPROMO process to fully configure DNS

Now what are your results?

OK, then I apologize. I thought you meant the "subzones" (_msdcs, _sites,
_tcp and_udp). These are the automagic zones I was referring to. I am unaware
of the "other" _msdcs.domain.com zone.

I am not talking about the _msdcs subzone I am talking about a new separate
zone called _msdcs.domain.com.

I tested a few times in the lab but it didn't create a separate zone. It
created a sub zone under the main domain.com zone.

It will still install those, you just need to create the domain.com zone (or
make sure it's already created) and it can accept dynamic registrations.
DCPROMO registers the info in the DNS you point to, whether it installs DNS
for you or not. There is an option to register all that manually, but as
long as you do the above you need not do such penance.

Hi,

I just wanted to clarify something before recommending it to the client.

If you are not installing the DNS server during the DCPROMO, it won't create
a new _Msdcs.domain.com zone automatically. I am going to recommend
creating a _mscdcs.doamin.com before the DCPRMO. If you do this it will
automatically populate all the records in the appropriate zones, then change
the replication scope to forest wide.

I wanted to make sure I am doing the right thing. I am using Windows 2003
DNS. Is there any other option out there other than configuring _mscds zone
manually? I don't plan to install DNS during the DCPROMO.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Santhosh
