Just to add a bit:
If NetBIOS domain names in logon window cause confusion (despite the fact
that it is default), then with little help of TweakUI or registry hack
Windows 2000/XP (not sure about 2003) can show you DNS names instead of
NetBIOS. It can even show a functional level (2000/2003) of domain.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DCacheShowDnsNames"=dword:00000001
"DCacheShowDomainTags"=dword:00000001
