Right now in my space we're in "get a brand name" era..but it wasn't that long ago we were in a "build a white box because anyone else uses crud parts" era.

I think it depends on what serverland you live in :-)

Brian,

Ouch! We don't know why he went with a Tyan system over an HP or Dell. With the current pricing of Dell servers, they are far below even the Tyan barebones server chassis.

I used to work for a large international company, and certain international divisions were only approved to purchase from specific vendors (Dell,Compaq, HP were not one of them). So some areas had these servers with names I had not heard of before, but we had to support them anyway. He may be in the same situation, where he has the unfortunate responsibility of supporting such a hardware.

Yet, I would agree with you, that when you are buying from the big guys, they have already resolved this problem, and offer the toolset to accomplish what he wants to do.

I would NOT recommend trying to use any other flash tools, other than what the vendor provides. I am sure they would not work, but just in case, do not try it.

Jef

No, good luck with that. Buy name brand servers with real tools next
time. You get what you paid for when you don't buy a nice shrink wrapped
box with a bunch of people in the background who already thought of this
problem.
