happy to see environmentalism on the list ..

art is toxic, often. as guilty as any industry for leaving its waste
behind. i shudder still at the memory of a large skip being filled with
student art come the end of each semester at elam, what a waste.

i like to think that digital art has a healthier ecology of production
and distribution.

part of the problem of environmental toxicity for digital artist comes
with the components we used and the speed at which we often replace our
machines.

greenpeace staged a campaign against apple which it saw as disregarding
the environmental impact of its electronics:

http://www.greenpeace.org/apple/

and apple responded to the message and have made improvements. there's
now a section of their site with much info about environmentalism and
computer manufacturing:

http://www.apple.com/environment/

which all makes for good reading. they have a document that
outlines their expectations of human rights for suppliers and
manufacturers as well:

http://www.apple.com/supplierresponsibility/

that was a basis for auditing a chinese ipod manufacturer in 2006 which
resulted in improvements for the workers in the factory.
