I just want to reframe things a bit here Thanks Honor for your sensibleness : )
And thanks everyone else for other ideas that have surfaced overnight, those are the kind of things that feel more exciting and appropriate for this In truth, we've been having 'the media lab conversation' for years and years, so moving away from that as a default response feels really positive to me. So fwiw, here are some things that I would like to be able to spend money on, all of which are based in the many supportive ad productive things that are already happening here: - Supporting + growing regional community-based hacklabs / maker spaces / project spaces etc (like The Green Bench, pretty much everything Julian Priest does in Wanganui, makerspace, the chch creative space, etc) - as far as appropriate for different practices - A mobile media lab of sorts - BLERTA style indeed Damian. I bet a lot of people have fantastised about this one over the years, so why not just do it? - or mobile residency / project workshops, happening in different places around the country each year or something. There are a few of these already, like the mega-organised and fantastic SCANZ, and some more university-driven ones that I know of, but these could also be simpler + more ad hoc. - Supporting and growing residency spaces around the country, either for group project development, or a focused + scenic working space - Hosting distributed get togethers via some kind of distributed video system (as we will trial at the agm) - Being able to host + transport visiting media artists around the country to actually provide a more fulfilling experience + help connect visiting artists + the local community (I've been wanting this for ages after we've had some complicated times trying to hustle bits of funding from various places for people like Alessndro Ludovico last year, and having failed to be able to help other people who've emailed me about visiting) - I am super nervous about equipment - things become obsolete so quickly, it's not easy to get funding for etc, but I think there could be value a pool of useful gear that could be used for development and exhibition - something to support galleries to show digital / media art etc, as I think that exhibition step can be really tricky + many curators find it technically challenging. - After the 'critical engagement' discussion at the symposium we talked about trying a kind of 'crit' session / workshop at the next symposium, and it would be great to try to develop that I think, to provide the kind of feedback and support that people miss after art school, and also to help curators, writers etc find ways to engage with ADA-like work What do you guys reckon - other ideas? best zit _______________________________________________ Ada_list mailing list [email protected] http://aotearoadigitalarts.org.nz/
