WANTED 3 MINUTE VIDEO CLIPS FOR ‘BACKYARD DANCES’

FOR ‘THE ELECTROSMOG FESTIVAL’ 19 – 21 March (NZ time)

WITH SUPPORT FROM AOTEAROA DIGITAL ARTISTS NETWORK

BACKYARD DANCES is an on-line community dance that brings the ordinary and the local to the global stage. It is to be performed live with support from ADA as part of the Electrosmog Festival.

We need help to create a global community, an online neighbourhood of backyard ‘dancers’. Transform your backyard into a screen ‘dance’ to be used in an online community dance project that responds to the question, can remote connections become a truly rewarding experience in and of themselves?

WANTED

30 sec - 3 minute videos transcribing the terrain of your backyard, the micro and the macro, the gritty and the serene, the discarded and the sculptured through the lens of a camera. Take us on a journey, offer a new perspective, strap your camera (it can be any camera as long as it does end up being in a digital format you can email - or put online) to your foot, your knee, your elbow or your head and make a recording of the path made by your private (or not so private) dance in your own backyard.

Send us your recordings (no more than 3 minute qtvr/mp4) and these will be transcribed into a choreographic score for a performed series of solo dances from divergent places. This global ensemble facilitates a new community of backyard dancers who will perform live as part of the Electrosmog Festival.

Send your images or enquiries to:

MP4’s and Quicktime movies accepted

DEADLINE FOR VIDEO SUBMISSIONS: 12th March 2010

MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT AND THE ELECTROSMOG FESTIVAL

ElectroSmog is a new festival that revolves around the concept, Sustainable Immobility. By Sustainable Immobility the festival refers to ‘a critique of current systems of hyper mobility of people and products in travel and transport, and their ecological unsustainability.’ In the quest to create a more sustainable life style, the festival aims to ‘celebrate stronger links to local cultures, while at the same time deepening our connections to others across any geographical divide, using new communication technologies instead of physical travel.’

The Electrosmog festival sets out to critically re-examine these possibilities and seriously start to turn them into viable choices. More can be found out about the Festival at http:// www.electrosmogfestival.net/

The paradox in using new information technologies to resolve the proposed unsustainable ‘hyper mobile existence’ is the effect of immobilization at the most local site of all, our bodies.

Responding to the screen as a dominating presence and the provocation ‘Designing for Immobility’ motivates the question - what occurs to the body and proprioceptive capabilities in these environments? We once relied on our sensory-motor responses to navigate distance, now we substitute the eyes and semiotics via the screen surface to ‘defy distance’. Time, space and body relations have entered a genesis. ‘BACKYARD DANCES’ investigates the role of our bodies matter in the promise of ubiquity: being everywhere at once, while staying at home, in our own backyard.

In response to this, ‘BACKYARD DANCES’ needs you to go out into your backyard with a camera. ‘BACKYARD DANCES’ transports the backyard as actuated space for live choreography using web cameras, chat rooms, transcriptions, the imagination, text and the dancing body.

Become part of a community dance through digital image making, embodied to make a dance ensemble made from a collection of moving image found in your ‘own backyard’.
