I wanted to mention also that I don't think that the trained engineer and inventive coder are at all mutually exclusive. Many of the solutions Damian's come up that improved my base code are not just structural improvements but creative solutions to very difficult problems. It's simply now a much better project (wait until you see our beautiful new UI!).
It's here that the hacker approach often hits a glass ceiling - at a certain point you need to do your homework to progress beyond the working prototype stage and deliver something great. You need to be both experienced and creative in the context of the given engineering problem. In the context of Machine Vision projects I often find myself reading API documentation, decomposing algorithms and making countless tests while someone like Damian is already surging onward with an actual implementation.. thinking it through in a future-proof way. There are only a few programming contexts in which I feel that capable.. Anyway, this isn't an interview.
