Best is to get a hold of Russell as he is active in it and get the details wrt
to private interest groups. There are several. and thats really his domain.
Wrt to the federal initiative its small but interesting. A four day seminar
was held a few months back for federal employees to expose them to OS
technologies. Sun, IBM., EU commissioners were there etc etc. We are all
currently waiting for the official website to be launched, remember this is
government, and it will be probably be a few more months till the site is up.
The effort however is sincere and has potential. The starting point will be
an assessment of DSS purchasing criteria and have them ammended to allow for
a more even playing field as currently OSS does not qualify given the current
tendering process and criteria. That does not mean that OSS does not exist in
the federal level, it does, just the existing purchasing structure does not
include provisions for it. You really have to understand and be familiar with
DSS contract requirements and purchasing rules to get a grip on this issue.
Its a good move and good starting point. The individual heading this is
Joseph Potvin.
