My dumbest video moment:

I'm shooting underwater video in the Solomon Islands, and the big dive boat
anchors at a special reef that few people dive for a twilight dive when the
really interesting underwater critters come out. I put my camera in the
housing, get my dive gear together, get in the skiff to go to the reef, and
when we get there I back roll in the water and drop down to the reef.

It's spectacular. There are schools of sexually charged sailfin tangs
spawning in the water column, eagle rays in the distance, strobing
cuttlefish prowling the reef, and lots more. I hit the on button with my
thumb and -- nothing happens. I try again. Nothing.

It's then that I realize I forgot to turn the power on switch manually when
I sealed the camera in the housing, then power down electronically from the
housing. There's no way I can turn on the camera without surfacing and
getting back to dry conditions on the boat, which would mean ending the dive.

Needless to say it was one of the most spectacular dives I've ever been on,
and all I've got are memories.

The only good part of the whole fiasco is that I turned it into the
centerpiece event of a magazine article I published in Scuba Diving
magazine titled "Stupid Video Tricks."
