I've had a similar problem (MPG files were seen as
video without audio). I tried with many conversion
programs but the problem remained, until I uses the
simple Windows Movie Maker. You can take the MPG file,
insert it in the timeline and then use the option of
saving the film into your PC, you choose DV AVI option
and you have it ready for Premiere. It is a bit heavy
as you have to do it file by file, but it works. Mi
Windows Movie Maker keeps hanging after each
conversion (though it does them), so you can imagine
it is not a wonderful solution, but it works!!

Good luck,

Laura
